NEW DELHI: Former

Bangladesh

Prime Minister

Sheikh Hasina

left Dhaka for a “safer place” in a

military helicopter

after

resigning

on Monday. Several videos doing rounds on social media showed her getting out of the car next to the military helicopter. Soon after, thousands of protesters stormed her official residence
Meanwhile, Bangladesh army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman confirmed that she resigned before leaving the country.

Earlier, Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, urged the country’s security forces to prevent any takeover. “Your duty is to keep our people safe and our country safe and to uphold the constitution,” said Joy.
Deadly

protests

erupted on Sunday, killing 94 deaths 14 police officers. The total number of people killed since the protests began in early July has reached at least 300, according to an news agency AFP.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been in power in Bangladesh since 2009, securing her fourth consecutive term in January’s election, which lacked genuine opposition participation.
Human rights organizations have accused her government of abusing state institutions to consolidate power and suppress dissent, including through extrajudicial killings of opposition activists.
The protests initially erupted in response to the reintroduction of a quota system that allocated more than half of all government positions to specific groups. Despite the Bangladesh Supreme Court’s decision to scale back the scheme, the demonstrations intensified.
