PATNA: Education department on Friday transferred a female teacher posted at a

primary school

in Banka district for allegedly taking all the schoolchildren to a nearby temple to make them

swear

in the name of God that they had not stolen her Rs35 from her purse.
Authorities acted after the villagers strongly objected to the teacher’s behaviour and created a ruckus on the school premises the next day.

Informed sources said the students had reached the school at Asmanichak village in Rajaun block on Wednesday when schoolteacher Neetu Kumari asked a student to bring a water bottle kept in her purse. When she checked her purse soon thereafter, she found Rs35 missing and enquired from the students. As none of them gave a convincing answer about her missing cash, she took all the children to a nearby temple and asked them to swear by the deities, reports said.
A total of 122 students were present in the school other day and she was the lone teacher on duty. The school has only two teachers.

The villagers and parents of children on Thursday demanded action against the schoolteacher, else they would not allow the school to function.
“It is improper to suspect any student this way,” block education officer (BEO) Kumar Pankaj told TOI on Friday, adding the teacher had been shifted elsewhere.
Schoolteacher Neetu said she only enquired from the students about her missing money. “The students themselves rushed to the nearby temple to swear before the deities,” she said, adding she was shocked and shattered after the villagers entered the school premises and created commotion. “I have been teaching at this school for the past 18 years. How can I doubt my own students,” she asked. She, however, hasn’t found her stolen money.
Mukhiya Anupam Kumari said the such a behaviour of teacher is not fair. “A resentment prevails among the villagers over this incident. We have called a meeting of teachers and parents on Saturday.”
