NEW DELHI: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Friday defended her brother, Rahul Gandhi on Friday, rejecting BJP‘s allegations of violence during a scuffle outside Parliament as “false and baseless”
Speaking to the media, Priyanka accused the BJP of fabricating the claims out of desperation to divert attention from pressing issues.
“This is the government’s desperation,” she said. “They are so desperate that they are lodging false FIRs. Rahul ji can never push anyone. I am his sister, I know him. He can never do such a thing. Frankly, the country knows this too. The country is watching how desperate they are that they are lodging baseless FIRs. These are all distractions.”
She also accused the BJP-led central government of habouring insincere sentiments toward the architect of Constitution, while fearing the opposition’s growing unity.
“They know that their true sentiments for Ambedkar ji have come out,” said Priyanka Gandhi. “Now, they are scared of the Opposition because we are raising this issue. National interest is related to this matter. Our Constitution has been given by Ambedkar ji, the people of this country, and our freedom struggle. Such insult to him will not be tolerated by India.”
She further targeted the government for avoiding discussions on the
Adani controversy
, accusing them of fear and evasion. “This government is scared. This government is scared to have a discussion on the Adani matter. It is scared of having any discussion,” she said.
Meanwhile, her defence of Rahul Gandhi came after BJP MPs accused LoP in Lok Sabha, of pushing a fellow MP during a heated altercation in Parliament on Thursday. BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi claimed he was injured when another MP fell on him after being pushed by Rahul Gandhi.
“I was standing near the stairs when Rahul Gandhi came and pushed a fellow MP. That MP fell on me, causing me to fall as well,” Sarangi told reporters. He was later taken for medical treatment for a head injury.
In response, BJP MPs, led by Anurag Thakur, lodged a complaint with Delhi Police against Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of “assault and incitement.” Meanwhile, Congress MPs filed their own complaint with Parliament Street Police, alleging that BJP MPs had misbehaved with Congress president Kharge during the altercation.
Rahul Gandhi denied the allegations, saying that he was pushed and threatened by BJP MPs while attempting to enter Parliament. He also claimed that Mallikarjun Kharge was similarly manhandled.
“This might be on your camera. I was trying to go inside through the Parliament entrance, but BJP MPs were trying to stop me, push me, and threaten me. This has happened. Yes, this has happened (to Mallikarjun Kharge as well),” he said.
