On IMD's 150th anniversary, PM Modi to launch 'Mission Mausam' today

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of India Meteorological Department‘s 150th foundation day celebration, PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday will launch ‘

Mission Mausam

‘ with the goal of making the country a ‘weather-ready, climate-smart’ nation.
The mission aims at achieving the goal by deploying cutting-edge weather surveillance technologies and systems, implementing

high-resolution atmospheric observations

, next-generation radars and satellites, and high-performance computers.
Modi will also release IMD Vision-2047 document for

weather resilience

and

climate change adaptation

.
IMD as part of its celebration is organising a series of events, activities and workshops where its role in making India climate-resilient will be discussed and demonstrated over the next two days.

It has also invited meteorologists and climate scientists from different countries, including Pakistan, Maldives, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Nepal, to participate in different events. Though Bangladesh weather scientists were also invited by the IMD for the celebration, the neighbouring country decided not to allow their participation, citing restrictions on non-essential foreign travel at govt expense.
Established in 1875, the IMD turns 150 on Jan 15. The Met department, for the first time ever, will also showcase its own tableau in the upcoming Republic Day parade.
