NEW DELHI:
Congress
is likely to contest
Ladakh parliamentary seat
in upcoming
2024 elections
, which will make it the third seat of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state to come to the party’s kitty.
Sources said partner
National Conference
has agreed to Congress’s claim on Ladakh seat of the newly-carved UT. It will be some consolation for the principal opposition party which was keen on securing
Anantnag constituency
in Kashmir region, only to be rebuffed by ally NC which asked Congress to contest two seats in Jammu region, a difficult turf in view of ruling BJP’s stranglehold on the area.
A senior Congress leader said, “We will contest the Ladakh seat. It has been decided. We were also keen on Anantnag where we performed well last time, but National Conference is unwilling. Congress is making sacrifices for the larger cause of opposition unity.”
