Actor
Mohanlal
has resigned as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) following widespread criticism and growing pressure over the handling of sexual
harassment allegations
within the Malayalam film industry. All members of the AMMA
executive committee
have also submitted their joint resignation.
The resignations come in the wake of the findings by the
Justice K Hema Committee
, which revealed harassment and abuse of women professionals in the industry.
The report has sparked outrage and led to mounting calls for action against those implicated in the allegations.
On Sunday, the controversy deepened as more accounts of harassment surfaced, including a resurfaced allegation involving actor-politician Mukesh. The revelations have sent shockwaves through the Malayalam film industry, prompting high-profile resignations and public outcry.
In response to the growing scandal, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan convened a high-level meeting with senior police officials and announced the formation of a seven-member special team to investigate the atrocities faced by women actors in the industry.
The fallout has also seen the resignation of Director Ranjith and actor Siddique from their leadership roles in a state-run film academy and AMMA, respectively, as the industry faces increasing scrutiny over its handling of these serious allegations.
