‘Meow Meow’ turns into roar, drugs worth Rs 1,800cr seized

Published:

New Delhi: Raids by Pune Police at several locations in south Delhi on Tuesday led the sleuths to a massive haul of party drug ‘

Meow Meow

‘. About 970kg of the contraband – worth over Rs 1,800 crore – was seized, making it the biggest recovery of the drug from the national capital.
Officials said that the Pune crime branch cops, assisted by Delhi Police personnel as per protocol, first raided a godown in

Kotla Mubarakpur

in south Delhi where they seized nearly 300kg of the drug and arrested two people. Another raid was subsequently conducted at a rented shop in

Masjid Moth

near Greater Kailash in south Delhi and over 670kg of the contraband was recovered. The room and shop were recently taken on rent, officials said.
Pune Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said overall, 1,700kg of the drug had been seized so far and eight people arrested. Apart from the Delhi seizure, 720kg was found in Pune. The total value of the contraband is over Rs 3,500 crore in the international market, officials said.
The Delhi bust has led the Pune cops to probe a courier firm too, according to sources. Interrogation of suspects revealed part of the contraband was being sent to London through a Delhi-based courier company after being concealed in ready-to-eat processed food packets, said a senior cop. One of the courier firm staffers has been detained and will be taken to Pune for further questioning.

The massive seizure rang alarm bells in the security establishment. While it suggested that Delhi’s party circuit was flying high on the highly addictive drug, it also raised questions about how the city police, especially specialised units like special cell and crime branch, were unaware of a racket of such a scale running right under their nose.
Narcotics wing officials recalled that it was in 2014-15 that Delhi Police had started a crackdown on this drug after Mumbai cops busted several ‘Meow Meow’ rings running on their turf.

In the following years, the crackdown by special cell escalated to save the youths from coming in the drug’s grip. Many rackets running in areas like GK and CR Park – which also figure in the latest bust – were busted. From recovery of 3kg in 2014-15, the seizures rose to 57kg in 2015-16, a nearly 20-fold jump. However, the crackdown became less frequent over the years, with the last two years barely seeing any major operation being conducted in the capital.
The drug is known with street names like Bubbles, Bounce, M-Cat and Drone. The contraband also has some serious “bad trips”.
