NEW DELHI: Chief minister
Arvind Kejriwal
waited with his
parents
at his official Civil Lines residence for
Delhi Police
to arrive for questioning them in the Swati Maliwal assault case. However, the cops did not visit the house on Thursday.
Around noon, Kejriwal released a video message saying, “I am waiting for police with my parents and wife. Yesterday, police called my parents and asked for time for interrogation.
But the cops haven’t given any information yet on whether they will come today.”
Aam Aadmi Party
also released video footage depicting CM assisting his elderly parents, both of whom seemed to be walking with difficulty, to a room where the questioning was to take place.
Later in the evening, Kejriwal accused PM
Narendra Modi
of “crossing all limits” in “targeting” his old and ailing parents to “break”. At a virtual press conference the AAP national convener said, “My mother is very sick. Modi Ji, on March 21, when you arrested me, my mother returned home that same afternoon after being in hospital for some days. My father is 85 years old. He cannot hear properly. Do you think my parents are guilty? Why are you getting them interrogated by your police? Why are you torturing my old and sick parents? Your fight is with me, stop harassing my parents. God is watching everything.”
Kejriwal added, “PM Modi, you have tried to make me bend and break me. You arrested many of my MLAs, but I did not break. You arrested my ministers, but you could not bend me. Then you arrested me, you tried to break me by torturing me in Tihar jail, but I did not break.”
After news about the impending arrival of police at the CM’s residence spread, AAP functionaries, including MP Sanjay Singh, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Atishi, gathered there. Atishi remarked, “All limits have been crossed as CM Arvind Kejriwal’s old and ailing parents are being interrogated today. How can PM stoop so low and harass CM’s elderly parents?”
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva retorted to this saying, “Two days before polling, Kejriwal is trying to win the voters’ sympathy by bringing his elderly parents into the picture. A crime occurred in a house and a woman was assaulted. Police are investigating this. If Kejriwal is so eager for the investigation, why is he still associating with the alleged criminal?”
Sachdeva countered that it was Kejriwal who had crossed all limits of decency. “Kejriwal has involved his elderly parents in his petty politics. He is completely cornered in the case involving Swati Maliwal and is now using his parents as a tool for public sympathy.”
He said Kejriwal should reveal who informed him that police were coming to question his parents. “He himself creates drama, and just two days before the voting day, he is trying to gain sympathy from the people of Delhi by bringing his elderly parents into the fray,” he claimed.
