Kashmir army jawan dies as colleague’s gun fires ‘accidentally’

SRINAGAR: An

army jawan

died and another was injured after a colleague’s rifle allegedly went off accidentally in a camp in north Kashmir’s

Bandipora

district on the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday.
The deceased jawan has been identified as Vipin Batya, 40, of 14 Rashtriya Rifles and the injured as Yogesh, 37.
The jawan whose gun allegedly went off in the camp, located in Bandipora’s Bapora area, has been detained,

Bandipora police

said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Police sources said they suspected an altercation.
“There has been an accidental discharge of weapon, resulting in a casualty and injury to army personnel. Accused army personnel detained. Necessary legal action initiated,” a police post stated.

The episode comes at a time operations are on for over four days in

Anantnag

since

terrorists

killed a colonel, a major and a DSP, and a day after three LOC infiltrators were shot dead in Uri. Bandipora is over 200km from Anantnag and around 50km from Uri.
