Karnataka ‘caste census’ report with govt

Published:

BENGALURU: After months of dithering and political speculation, Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes (KSCBC) submitted its Socio-Economic and Education Survey report, commonly called a “caste census“, to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on Thursday.

Siddaramaiah said they were yet to review report, and indicated govt intends to put it before cabinet and deliberate next steps after gathering everyone’s input. He has signalled intention to accept the report.

Sources claimed govt is considering forming a cabinet sub-committee to first analyse census findings. Census was commissioned by Siddaramaiah-led Congress govt in 2015. KSCBC, chaired by HA Kantharaju at that time, concluded its work in 2018.

However, the report has since remained under wraps.

“…We’ve maintained fundamental aspects of Kanthraju report,” clarified commission chairman K Jayaprakash Hegde. With the submission of the report, the tenure of the commission led by Hegde ended on Thursday.
