Latest For Me

Query: I caught my mother-in-law breastfeeding my newborn while I away taking a bath. I was truly shocked but she said my baby was crying so to soothe him she made him take her breasts. It sounds so abnormal. I told my husband and he says I should ignore the episode. I don’t want it to happen again! How do I approach the topic with my MIL?
Response by Dr. Rachna Khanna Singh: There is no easy answer to this question, as it will likely depend on the dynamics between you and your MIL. Some couples may be able to openly discuss the issue, while others may find it more difficult. Ultimately, you will need to decide what is the best way to communicate with your MIL about your concerns.

Some things to keep in mind:
-It is important to be respectful when discussing this topic with your MIL. Do not sound accusatory as it is evident she does not seem to have ill intentions.
-Try to frame the conversation in a positive light, and express your concerns in a clear and concise way.
– It may be helpful to have specific examples of things that concern you, in order to give your MIL a better understanding of your concerns at the same time try to get her perspective on why this is normal for her. There could be cultural or generational reasons.

-If possible, try to come to a resolution that both you and your MIL are comfortable with.
