Avocado at home

Avocado has been in all the rage for quite a few years now. Although it is tasteless and bland, it is extremely nutritious and can be made into many tasty dishes. Here we mention how to grow an avocado plant from the seed.

Buy a healthy avocado

First start by buying a healthy avocado from the grocery store and make sure that the fruit is free from any mold and is not eaten by insects. The quality of the fruit also decides how good the seed is.

Take the seed out

Now, cut the avocado in half and make sure that the knife does not damage the seed inside. Scoop the seed out and wash it well. Make sure to use lukewarm water while cleaning it to make sure that there is no pulp left on it.

Keep the avocado seed in a moist napkin

Wrap the avocado in a moist napkin and keep it in a dark place for a few weeks. You’ll notice that the roots and shoots have started sprouting from the avocado seed– this is when you take out the seed.

The top and bottom of the avocado seed

Next up, see which is the top and bottom of the avocado seed. The top is slightly pointed, while the bottom is rounder. This is important because the bottom part is where the roots will come out, while the pointy edge is where the shoots grow from.

Place it in water

Now, take a glass or container with a mouth wide enough to place the avocado seed in it. Ensure that the bottom part is in the container.

Add water to the glass

Now, fill the glass or jar with water and keep the seed over the opening so that the bottom half is completely covered in water. Place the glass in a warm, sunny spot, so that roots and shoots grow well.

Change water

To prevent mold and bacteria, change the water every few days. Make sure that the bottom of the seed is always submerged in fresh water. Within a few days, the shoots will grow into leaves.

Transfer it to soil

Once the roots are several inches long and the stem has grown a few leaves, it’s time to transfer the avocado seedling into soil. Choose a pot with good drainage holes and fill it with a rich potting mix. Then add the seed (with roots and stem) into it. But ensure only the roots are in the soil, while the seed is placed outside.

How often does it need water?

Water the newly potted avocado plant thoroughly after transferring it to soil and make sure that the soil is kept moist throughout. Allow the soil to dry out in between the watering, but make sure that the soil does not crack from the dry spell.

Sunlight needs

Avocado plants grow well in bright, indirect sunlight. Place the plant pot in a location where it can receive at least six hours of sunlight daily.

When will you first see Avocados?

Well this will require a ton of patience. As the plant grows, it’s important to prune it well and maintain it. The time from a seed to a fruit takes about 3-5 years, but can lessen if organic fertilisers and the likes are used.
