Gwyneth Paltrow
has an epic reaction to the surprising news of
Robert Downey Jr
‘s return to Marvel as a villain.
The 59-year-old actor, best known for his role as
Iron Man
, was announced as the iconic villain
Doctor Doom
in the upcoming Russo Brothers’ directorial ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which will serve as a precursor to ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
Upon hearing the news, Paltrow, who played Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), took to the comments section of Downey Jr’s Instagram post to express her surprise, humorously asking, “I don’t get it, are you a baddie now?”
The Russo Brothers, who worked of the billion-dollar blockbusters ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, are set to direct both movies.
The duo responded to Paltrow’s comment saying, “We’ve always said green is your color…”, referring to Doctor Doom’s iconic look.
Paltrow and Downey have shared a strong on-screen and off-screen friendship for over a decade, having first teamed up in 2008’s ‘Iron Man’, the film that launched the MCU over a decade ago. Their characters, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, became a beloved on-screen couple, appearing together in several MCU films including ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and their final outing together in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The latter notably featured the emotional death of Iron Man, which many fans thought marked the end of RDJ’s run in the MCU.
During an Instagram Q&A with fans last year, Paltrow hinted that her time with Marvel might be over, stating, “Why do you need Pepper Potts without Iron Man?” However, with Robert’s unexpected return as Doctor Doom, the possibility of Paltrow’s return to the MCU in some capacity can’t be completely ruled out.
