In the wave of re-releases, Sohum Shah and Rahi Anil Barve‘s
Tumbbad
has emerged as the biggest box-office success in Hindi cinema. The film has now earned more during its re-releases than in its original run and continues to perform well into its third weekend, despite Jr NTR’s Devara giving it a tough competition.
Tumbbad achieved cult status, and this is now evident as audiences flock to theaters for its re-release, despite the film being available on OTT platforms.
The film, known for its unique storytelling and atmospheric visuals, minted an impressive Rs 24.50 crore in just two weeks of re-release. Although there was a drop in its third-weekend collections, earning Rs 55 lakh on Friday compared to Rs 90 lakh on Thursday, it bounced back significantly. On Saturday, the film collected Rs 95 lakh, followed by Rs 1.1 crore on Sunday, bringing its re-release total to Rs 27.1 crore. Including its original run, Tumbbad’s overall box office collection now stands at Rs 40.6 crore, cementing its legacy as a modern classic.
Actor-producer Sohum Shah has confirmed a sequel to Tumbbad, but director Rahi Anil Barve is stepping aside due to his commitments to other projects. Barve is currently working on
Gulkanda Tales
, featuring Pankaj Tripathi, Kunal Kemmu, and Abhishek Banerjee, produced by
Raj and DK
. He also revealed his upcoming project,
Rakht Brahmand
, reportedly starring Aditya Roy Kapur, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Ali Fazal, and Wamiqa Gabbi, also produced by Raj and DK. Tumbbad, based on a story Barve’s friend shared in 1993 and written by Marathi author
Narayan Dharap
, faced numerous challenges before its eventual 2018 release.
