Kamala Harris
officially secured the required number of
delegate votes
to become the Democratic US presidential nominee on Friday, making her the first
woman of colour
to lead a major party ticket.
This announcement was made by the Democratic National Committee chairman
Jaime Harrison
. Harris’s nomination was confirmed through a virtual vote.
Kamala Harris shared her reaction on becoming the Democratic nominee for the presidential race in a post on X, saying, “I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for President of the
United States
.
I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about people coming together, fueled by love of country, to fight for the best of who we are.”
However, the online voting process continues until Monday, Kamala Harris’ campaign celebrated her crossing the threshold to secure the majority of delegates’ votes.
The announcement followed news that her campaign raised $310 million last month, an impressive sum that indicates donors, previously concerned about the November election with President Joe Biden, are now contributing substantial funds to support his former vice president.
Harris, the Democratic National Committee, and affiliated entities significantly outpaced Republican former President Donald Trump, whose campaign and associated committees reported raising $138.7 million in July.
