Poor impact of strict parenting
Strict parenting or “because I said so ” syndrome, is marked by high demands and low responsiveness. Parents mean well when they believe that a firm hand is necessary when it comes to disciplining their young one, but research suggests that overly strict parenting can lead to a range of negative outcomes. However, here are some significant impacts of strict parenting:

Low academic performance
When parents pressurise them for higher academic achievement, the pressure can have the opposite effect. The fear of failure, punishment, comparison, and humiliation can lead to burnout and lower academic performance. Children may also develop a negative attitude toward learning and school.

Increased anxiety
High levels of parental control can create an atmosphere of constant pressure and fear of failure, leading to anxiety. This is because the child will constantly fear making mistakes as they know this will attract punishment.

Adverse mental health issues
This anxiety from the fear of failure and strict parenting can lead to long-term mental health issues such as depression. Additionally, the fear of punishment may kill any dreams your child may have, as they might worry that you will disapprove of them, and this will only increase their anxiety.

Poor decision-making skills
Strict and overprotective parents often don’t allow their child to make their own decisions. This affects their long-term ability to make decisions due to a lack of development of crucial decision-making and problem-solving skills. Instead, you should let the child make mistakes and learn from them, so that when they are older, theri decisions are more informed.

Poor social skills
When you constantly compare your children with others it causes them to have low self-esteem, where they think of themselves as low from others. So, being a strict parent limits children’s opportunities to interact with peers and develop social skills. This makes it difficult for the children to form and maintain friendships/relationships.

Increased aggression
Over-controlled children often struggle with expressing their emotions, since they have never learnt how to channelise their feelings in the correct manner. This leads to years of pent-up frustration and anger, making them aggressive and leading to anger issues.

Rebellion and defiance
The feeling of aggression and anger can often turn into rebellion, wherein the child becomes hell-bent on doing the exact opposite of what their parents want/expect out of them. This rebellion comes in many forms – be it colouring their hair, getting tattoos and piercings, purposely doing bad in school, getting into fights or choosing a career path that does not align with what the parents wanted/expected out of the children.

Lack of creativity
Often, when parents are strict with their child, it can kill their instinctive creativity. This also affects their problem-solving skills and comprehension skills, since these children struggle to come up with creative solutions to problems.

Strained parent-child relationships
One of the biggest negative impacts of strict parenting is the strain that it puts on a parent’s relationship with their child. When parents struggle to understand and empathise with their children, the feelings of resentment grow to a point that for months/years, the children may choose to not speak with their parents and break all ties with them.
